UNIPANT: a European hub for culture and lifelong learning

The People’s University of PantelleriaUNIPANT is an Italian Social Promotion Association (APS), founded in 2023 on the island of Pantelleria (Sicily). Our organization was established specifically to mitigate the consequences of Pantelleria’s isolation by bringing culture, training, and inclusion to an island that is “often more isolated than insular.” Pantelleria depends on the mainland, reachable only by plane or ship, for most essential services, including advanced educational opportunities.

Affiliated with UNIEDA, a member of the national network of Popular Universities, UNIPANT is fully integrated into the European landscape of adult education and lifelong learning.

UNIPANT’s members and supporters are typically adults aged 30-60 who seek opportunities for continuous learning, personal growth, and socialization. The university actively promotes generational inclusion, opening its activities to young people aged 16 and over.

A crucial aspect of UNIPANT’s mission is accessibility, and our core value is making education free and available.

Thanks to the funding from two projects under Participatory Democracy and one project with the Municipality of Pantelleria, the association has been able to offer numerous educational and cultural activities free of charge to the island in its first two years of operation, maximizing social impact for the benefit of the community.

UNIPANT’s mission is based on the deep conviction that culture and social engagement are fundamental and indispensable elements for the growth of any society. The key principles are:

  • Inclusion and Accessibility: Ensuring that education and culture are accessible to all, regardless of economic status or age, through the strategic use of public funds.

  • Lifelong Learning: Offering a “low-stress” learning model focused on human experience and building social bonds, in addition to skill acquisition.

  • Cultural and Civic Promotion: Disseminating knowledge with a focus on personal and civic growth.

  • European Connection: UNIPANT is part of the Erasmus+ network for Adult Education, actively promoting mobility and cultural exchanges between staff and learners with other European countries (e.g., study trips with German Volkshochschulen).

Main Areas of Activity

UNIPANT’s offerings are structured into four macro-areas:

  • Educational Activities: Basic educational offerings (Courses, Workshops, Seminars) for informal and non-formal learning, which issue Certificates of Attendance (e.g., Languages, Astronomy, Computer Literacy).

  • Outreach Activities: Free initiatives open to all citizens, often funded through public tenders, for in-depth study of specific topics.

  • Cultural and Social Activities: Events, book presentations, guided tours, excursions, and international Study Trips through Erasmus+.

  • Certified Training Activities: Professional training with recognized certifications, thanks to specific agreements (eCampus, Pearson, etc.).

UNIPANT is a contemporary Popular University model that successfully combines continuous education, funded social commitment, and cultural promotion, acting as a bridge between the local reality of Pantelleria and the broader context of European learning.

Internal Organization

UNIPANT’s organizational structure sees the governing and decision-making bodies (Assembly of Members and Board of Directors) supported in the operational and management area by 9 Departments, each with its own Heads and Co-Heads. Each Department may have specific Competency Areas assigned to other Area Managers.
